Reinhardt Guide - Overwatch Mini Guide

We have all heard his roar. We have all been pinned. We’ve all been knocked down to the floor or taken the occasional power hammer to the face. But have we all put in the time and effort to learn what makes Reinhardt indispensable to a team? Regardless of your answer here is your chance to either learn a new hero or brush up on your shield master skills with this short, but sweet Reinhardt Guide .

Please note: This reinhardt Guide is aimed at beginners or those who have not played much of Reinhardt.

Reinhardt Wilhelm is the self-titled hero of a bygone age. He was a highly decorated German soldier and a member of the crusaders. This is the reason behind him being part of the original Overwatch strike squad that put an end to the Omnic crisis. Having served late into his 50s he was forced into a mandatory retirement. Though Overwatch was eventually disbanded, Reinhardt was not content to sit idly by while the world fell to disorder. Once again donning his Crusader armor, he has vowed to fight for justice across Europe like a knight of old, defending the innocent and winning hearts and minds with the promise of better days to come.

Reinhardt has a unique kit boasting the only full melee primary weapon as well as some of the strongest ‘E’ and ‘R’ abilities as well. His kit consists of the following:

  • Primary : Rocket hammer

    85 damage

    5m range

Reinhardt's Rocket Hammer is an exemplary mele weapon, able to deal pushing damage in a wide arc with every swing.

  • Secondary: Barrier field

    5 seconds if destroyed

Reinhardt projects a broad, forward-facing energy shield, which can absorb substantial damage before it is destroyed. Though Reinhardt can protect himself and his companions behind the shield, he cannot attack while sustaining it.

  • Shift: Charge

    10 seconds

Reinhardt charges forth in a straight line, grabbing hold of enemies in his path. If he collides with a wall, foes he’s carrying suffer extreme damage.

  • E: Fire strike

    100 damage

    6 seconds

By whipping his Rocket Hammer forward, Reinhardt slings a flaming projectile which pierces and damages any enemies it touches.

  • Ultimate: Earth shatter

    50 damage

    2.5 second knock down duration

Reinhardt forcefully slams his rocket hammer into the ground, knocking down and damaging all enemies in front of him.

So how do I use his awesome Kit? The versatility of his kit is quite remarkable but it is all about knowing when to use which ability. His primary rocket hammer is great for close quarter situations, it has a large swing arc and huge hit box. It is effective in hitting those pesky bastards as they are trying to dodge around a corner. In Meta play his shield is up at a few points in the game. When attacking right at the start when you leave the spawn point you should have it up with your team behind it, it will prevent the enemy from taking you out as you exit the base whilst bringing them closer to reload time so as to give you a few seconds of uninterrupted play time. Your shield also is counted as a structure in some cases so during a ultimate if your shield is up and you are facing her anyone behind the shield will not receive any damage, this can be used to stop a lot of ultimates including Pharah, Junkrat and McCree. The shield can also be used to give your sniper a clean shot at a hiding or camping enemy. During escorts with a Reinhardt and a bastion on the payload your shield will protect him as he picks off the enemies up in front. Your shift ability ‘charge’ is quite useful in many situations: getting to an objective quickly by charging gives you an amazing dash and speed boost; getting away out of the danger zone when your health is low; your charge can be used to pick off an enemy tank or damage dealer by pinning them against the wall before hitting them with a hammer; your charge can also be used in conjunction with your other abilities and your team in order to engage for a team fight. Your ‘e’ ability fire strike is particularly powerful and with a low cool down allows for it be spammed. Fire strike not only passes through all enemies in its path but also neglects shields so if they are behind a Winston dome your fire strike will still hit them. Your fire strike is especially useful in taking out snipers from long distance as it has no range cutoff and runs until it hits a structure. Now for your ultimate Earth shatter: earth shatter is an area of effect knock down and stun whilst still providing some damage your knock down does not believe in height and can take down an enemy above you provided they are in range. Your knock down works quite well with your hammer as it gives you free rein to hit all those now on the floor.

This dude seems cool but how do I wombo the combo with him? There are 120 different combinations you can use provided everything is available in terms of his abilities but this Reinhardt Guide will go through the few most important combos:

    1. The smash and dab: Whilst keeping your shield up you lower it to hit the enemy with your hammer and then quickly raise your shield again this can be used to maximize damage output whilst taking the least amount of damage in combat

    2. The flaming hammer: By either swinging your hammer first as a diversion or to lay down some base damage you create the perfect moment to disguise your close range fire strike with a hammer which will allow for maximum damage output.

    3. F**** camper: Keeping you shield up to absorb a few shots from the widow maker hiding in the building wait for a shot have just hit then let loose with a flaming strike right at the window.

    4. Faster than you can say ow my jaw; Charging in on a tank or just in to the center of the fight followed immediately by a flaming strike and a basic hammer strike should take down any hero no matter how tanky they are.

    5. WWE Smackdown: Charge in behind the enemies and let off an ultimate knocking a large number of them to floor this couples with a few hammer strikes and a fire strike might be all you need to earn play of the game.

Cool I like him but who does he work well with? That’s the thing he works well with pretty much anyone he can fit in into any team comp, but of course there are certain people who he works better with. Any of the less mobile damage dealers Junkrat, Bastion, Widowmaker, or even Hanzo his shield may be exactly what they need to get off a successful burst of damage. He couples very nicely with Torbjorn as he is able to protect Torbjorn’s turrets from being taken out instantly by an enemy sniper. He works very well with any dedicated healer on him but possibly the best person you can combo him with is Ana. Ana’s Nano boost on a Reinhardt is possibly the most devastating thing I have ever witnessed being able to one shot any enemy who dares to show their face or being able to with stand any ultimate makes Reinhardt a god with that Nano boost.

Ooh I am liking the idea of this guy but wait who counters him? Reinhardt is very likely and when played right has only three notable counters

    1. Tracer: Tracer’s mobility and ability to blink makes her near impossible to hit this coupled with how easy it is for her to just pop up behind your shield and kill you from behind makes her your main counter.

    2. Winston: Winston’s rail gun does not care about your shield allowing him to no matter what put constant damage on you.

    3. Reinhardt:  Remember Reinhardt’s hammer and fire strikedon’t believe in shields and so he is quite the big counter to you.

Now, use this Reinhardt Guide to go forth and play the shield master, avenge his fallen comrades and climb to glory on the battle fields of competitive play!
